Planning Guides

There are many excellent guides available for planning your tree preservation, planting and maintenance programs.

  • One of the most helpful and practical for small and large projects is from the Green Infrastructure Center called “Tree Planning and Planting C a m p a i g n s: A Guide for Reforesting Cities and Towns available at http://www.gicinc.org/PDFs/TreePlantingCampaignGuide_GIC_June2022.pdf

  • The Woods in Your Backyard: Learning to Create and Enhance Natural Areas Around You, 2nd Edition, 2022, Maryland Cooperative Extension Service, Virginia Dept of Forestry et.al. This guide is available in a “full text version to promote “he stewardship of small land parcels for the owner’s enjoyment and for improved environmental quality”, especially trees. A companion Workbook walks the reader through the planning process step by step.

  • “You are the Native Tree Campaign”. This Plant Nova Trees webpage includes examples of campaign planning, volunteer opportunities, materials ( signs, posters, brochures, flyers, stickers, etc.), groups to support efforts, and much more. Ideas for celebrating trees include promotions with businesses, library displays, and tree walks.

  • The i-Tree Primer from the Arbor Day Foundation provides a summary of some of the many i-Tree tools that can be used to assist tree owners and supporters to understand and quantify the environmental benefits from their trees individually or for their area. Certain tools are very user-friendly. The Primer can be found at https://www.arborday.org/trees/bulletins/coordinators/resources/pdfs/106.pdf and on this site here.

  • Urban Tree Canopy Assessment Toolkit 2022 by the Nature Conservancy provides information on planning resources to maximize urban tree canopy benefits and select strategies. Page 7 gives a good overview of the steps you could take. The report is available at https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5602e09be4b053956b5c8d3a/t/627bfeb0e1ff0852b278f1c9/1652293305647/Urban+Tree+Canopy+Toolkit+Final.pdf and here.

These are just some of the many available planning resources but more will be added in the weeks to come. If you have additional resources that you would like to suggest, please let us know.
